Efficiency Enhancement of Components Based on Talbot Effect

Abstract: Two ways to improve efficiency of components based on Talbot effect are considered in the present paper. One way is based on optimization of waveguide wall impedance, another one consists in modification of waveguide cross-section shape. Both methods allow correction of waveguide modes spectrum and lead to efficiency enhancement. For the important application of Talbot effect-remote steering antenna of a wavebeam in plasma-the steering band is expanded by 40-50%.

“…The RSLs will be fed from the main transmission as sketched in Fig.3 (left). As the imaging characteristics of square waveguides diminish at steering angles > 12°, we have started an R&D-programme to optimize RSLs with respect to steering range and beam quality [8,9]. One RSL will employ a square corrugated waveguide with an optimized control of the beam injection at the waveguide entrance.…”

“…For W7-X we have started conceptual design work on improved, CWcompatible, RSLs for the high field side launch. The RSL consists of a basically square corrugated waveguide with cross-section about 50 x 50 mm, however, with some modification to enlarge the steering range [19,20]. The integration between the coupling mirror situated in the main transmission system and the N-port of W7-X requires a mitre bend halfway along the waveguide.…”

“…The problem is that condition (3) is satisfied not well for all propagating modes, especially, for modes which are near the cut off [8]. In particular, the repetition efficiency decreases dramatically in the presence of high-order modes like TE 08 and TE 09 , which are also excited by the incident TE 04 mode.…”
