Research in sustainability has focused on the productive industry and other polluting sectors, leaving aside the sustainable development of the service industry such as retail. Increasingly, retail companies are facing substantial sustainability problems such as pressure from resource limitations, fierce competition, the variability of customer needs, and the development of technology. Adopting best practices through managerial learning is the key to achieving sustainable development for retailers. However, there is a lack of discussion of the micro mechanism of sustainable development in the existing sustainable research field. From the perspective of internal sustainable development, taking Chinese retailers as the sample, this study explores the effect of the managerial learning mechanism on sustainable development on the basis of empirical research. First, this study measures the management efficiency of Chinese retailers, which is the micro basis of sustainable development. Second, the effects of two types of managerial learning mechanisms (government-driven and professional organization driven) on management efficiency are tested. The results show that management efficiency contributes to the growth of the total factor productivity in Chinese retailers, and firms should attach importance to the improvement of management efficiency. Specifically, retailers can strengthen management efficiency by establishing managerial learning platforms with professional institutions, and thus prevent the substitution role of absorptive capacity.

Analysis on the structure effect of marine fishery total factor productivity under high-quality development in China

Improving total factor productivity (TFP) is the source of power for high-quality development. Industrial structure optimization is an important way to improve TFP. This paper constructed an econometric model of industry structure changes impacting on TFP in the marine fisheries and conducted an empirical test and analysis. The results showed that the industry rationalization, softening and processing coefficient of marine fishery had a significant “structural dividend” for improving its TFP; while the impact of industrial structure advancement and aquaculture-catching structure changes did not have “structural dividend”, but it could be a combination of other factors to reduce these adverse effects.We believe that simply pursuing the advanced evolution of the industrial structure is not conducive to sustainable development of fishery. Under the pursuit of the rationalization of the marine fishery industry structure, by promoting the coordinated evolution of marine fisheries advancement, aquaculture-catching structure and other factors, the "structural dividend" effect can be enhanced and the fishery can achieve sustainable development. Finally, it proposed to promote the development of advancement and rationalization of marine fishery industry structure coordinately, adjust fishery science and technology transformation direction and key points, and accelerate the development of intensive processing industry by cross-border integration.

PurposeDespite unanimity in the literature that eco-innovation (EI) leads to sustainable development, evidence remains limited on measuring EI efficiency with the Malmquist productivity index (MPI). In conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models, decision-making units (DMUs) are inclined to assign more favorable weights, even zero, to the inputs and outputs to maximize their own efficiency. This paper aims to overcome this shortcoming by developing a common set of weights (CSW). Design/methodology/approachUsing goal programming, this study develops a CSW model to evaluate the EI efficiency of the organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD) countries and track their changes with MPI during 2010–2018. FindingsAchieving a complete ranking of DMUs, findings show the higher discrimination power of the proposed CSW compared with the original DEA models. Furthermore, results reveal that Iceland, Latvia and Luxembourg are the only OECD countries that have incessantly improved their EI productivity (MPI > 1) from 2010 to 2018. On the other hand, Japan is the OECD country that has experienced the highest yearly EI efficiency during 2010–2018. This paper also found that Iceland has the highest MPI over 2010–2018. Practical implicationsMore investment in environmental research and development (R&D) projects instead of generic R&D enables OECD members to realize more opportunities for sustainable development through minimizing energy use and environmental pollution in any form of waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Originality/valueIn addition to developing a novel common weights model for DEA-MPI to measure and evaluate the EI of OECD countries, this paper develops a CSW model by including the undesirable outputs for EI analysis.
