Efficiency and Productivity Analysis of the Indian Agriculture Sector Based on the Malmquist-DEA Technique

Abstract: This article evaluated the agricultural performance of 31 states and union territories (UTs) in India from 2012 to 2017. The best agricultural productivity states and UTs in India were obtained using Malmquist based DEA technique and the efficiency score for each year was found using CCR model. The input parameter is taken as annual rainfall, total population, GDP, Workers, and net cultivated area, and the output parameter is taken as production of rice, wheat, coarse cereals, pulses, oil seeds, and sugarcane.… Show more

“…The DEA approach has been widely used in applied economic analysis for both agriculture and non-agricultural sectors. Some of the recent studies of efficiency and productivity growth in the agriculture sector include studies by Ali, Neda & Mahdi, (2018), Gunes and Guldal (2019), Chaubey, Sharanappa, Mohanta, Mishra, andMishra. (2022), andGalluzzo, (2018).…”

“…Again, Nandy and Singh (2020a) used hybrid Fuzzy DEA and Machine learning algorithm to measure the efficiency of paddy producer in eastern India. Malmquist-DEA was used to measure the agricultural productivity and efficiency of Indian States (RL and Mishra, 2022;Chaubey et al, 2022). However, there is a limited amount of literature in which the fuzzy DEA model is employed in agriculture.…”

“…Recently, Taeb et al [24] established a DEA model to measure the efficiency of time-dependent input-output of DMUs. The DEA method has been widely applied in various sectors such as banking, insurance, education, SCM, crisis management, sustainability, agriculture, energy, and healthcare services [5,12,16], making it a powerful and efficient MCDM approach. The traditional DEA models assume that the input and output variables are precise and deterministic, and do not account for uncertainties and vagueness in the data.…”
