Efficacy of the trial-based thought record, a new cognitive therapy strategy designed to change core beliefs, in social phobia

Abstract: This study provides preliminary evidence that TBTR is at least as efficacious as CCT in reducing symptoms of SAD, pointing to the need for additional studies of TBTR in SAD and other psychiatric disorders.

“…12 A possible explanation for this finding is that TBTR had a more significant effect on fear of negative evaluation (FNE) scores than CCT techniques, as shown in a previous publication of this study. 16 The one-way ANCOVA showed a significant treatment effect (F[1, 33] = 5.47; p = 0.03) at midtreatment and at post-treatment, with participants in the TBTR group scoring lower on FNE assessments than participants in the CCT group.…”

“…In a randomized trial in which the TBTR was compared with traditional CBT strategies, 36 patients presenting a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) were evaluated 9 . TBTR was at least as effective as conventional CBT in the treatment of SAD, and particularly effective in decreasing the fear of negative evaluation scores, supporting the relevance of further research with larger samples, and different disorders and populations.…”

“…Finally, de Oliveira and colleagues (2012) compared conventional CT to trial-based CT, an intervention focused on challenging core beliefs with cognitive therapy techniques modified to reflect courtroom procedures (e.g., examining evidence for and against as prosecutor and defense attorney). They found significant reductions in FNE scores from pre-treatment to post-treatment for both treatments, but post-treatment scores were lower among participants in trial-based CT than those in conventional CT (de Oliveira et al, 2012). Gains were maintained at 12-month follow-up for both treatment groups.…”
