Efficacy of sucralfate for Helicobacter pylori eradication triple therapy in comparison with a lansoprazole‐based regimen

Abstract: Extensive clinical studies of Helicobacter pylori have shown this bacterium to be an important causative factor of peptic ulcer, particularly in its recurrence. Therefore, numerous therapeutic trials for the eradication of H. pylori have been reported. A recent trend in curative therapy has been so-called triple therapy, using a proton pump inhibitor and two different antimicrobials. 1 Sucralfate, which is a widely used cytoprotective agent for the gastric mucosa, is reported to inhibit several of the activiti… Show more

“…24,26 Although the diagnostic value of the UBT has been previously reported, [28][29][30][31][32] this test is very expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, the UBT should be used for the confirmation of successful eradication therapy, 8,10,44,48 while it seems not to be adequate for mass surveys for H. pylori infection in large numbers of subjects.…”

“…They observed that this regimen achieved an eradication rate of 85%, the same as that obtained with lansoprazole-based triple therapy [76]. In addition, sucralfate, a widely used cytoprotective agent, is also reported to have an eradication rate of 80% when used with amoxycillin and clarithromycin [127].…”

“…Several clinical trials have produced the results of applying gastro‐protective agents to H. pylori eradication. Documents on sucralfate 18 and ecabet sodium 19 for instance, have reported comparable high eradication rates in combined use of antibiotics with these gastro‐protective drugs instead of proton pump inhibitor. Addition of cetraxate hydrochloride to the triple therapy (with proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics) has been also reported to improve eradication rate 20 .…”
