Efficacy of rice bran fermentation in cosmetics and skin care products

Abstract: This study aims to develop rice bran-based skin care products with moisturizing, whitening and anti-wrinkle effects similar to Pitera (a natural by-product of sake lees fermentation) but without alcohol irritation for sensitive skin. To achieve this objective, bran from organic indica rice was fermented by lactic acid bacteria in a safe and pollution-free environment. In terms of anti-oxidation, the DPPH.free radical scavenging ability of 100.0 mg/mL bran fermentation solution was 71.4% of that of vitamin C of… Show more

“…Juan and Chou [52] carried out a solid-state fermentation of black soybeans with Bacillus subtilis BCRC 14715 to evaluate the effect of fermentation on antioxidant activity: a final EC 50 value of 30.7 mg sample /mg DPPH was found. Moreover, Chen et al [53] developed a rice-bran-based skin care product through the fermentation of rice bran using lactic acid bacteria; the EC 50 value determined for the fermented rice bran was 811.5 mg sample /mg DPPH , higher than that obtained in this study, suggesting a higher antioxidant power of the fermented oatmeal produced.…”

“…Tyrosine conversion (tyrosine peak detected at a retention time of 3.7 min) in presence of postbiotic was lower than that observed after 60 min of reaction in control solution, indicating an inhibitory effect of the functional ingredient developed in this study. The ability of a fermented rice bran solution to inhibit melanin synthesis was investigated by Chen et al [53]. A lower IC50 value of 9.23 mg/mL than that obtained in this work was reported.…”

“…Skin care products made from fermented rice bran (FRB) have also been developed and were non‐irritating, moisturizing, antiaging, and whitening 33 . In human fibroblasts irradiated with UVB radiation, FRB extract increased type I collagen production, reduced expression of collagen degrading matrix metalloprotease 1, and decreased levels of IL‐1α.…”
