Efficacy of Parietal Acupoint Therapy: Scalp Acupuncture for Neck/Shoulder Stiffness with Related Mood Disturbance

Abstract: Objectives: Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture is a quick and effective microsystem of acupuncture used for treating various symptoms for which the somatotopic area is the scalp. This article describes Parietal Acupoint Therapy (PAPT), which is another approach, using a different scalp somatotopy, and to evaluate PAPT's effect on neck/shoulder stiffness and related mood disturbances. Materials and Methods: Subjects: Forty-six volunteers suffering from chronic neck/shoulder stiffness with various symptoms (headache… Show more

“…According to gating theory, a specific neural pathway for specific pain fibers (A delta nerve fiber) travels through the spinothalamic tract towards the central nervous system. When the touch and pressure are applied on specific reflex point, they would activate slow conducting C fibers that take the same pathway, and thus inhibit the path of A delta nerve fibers and block the pain (29). According to this theory, pain signals pass through a number of traffic "gates" as they move from the area of injury upwards through the spinal cord to the brain.…”

“…The role of touch in humans and its fundamental meaning for social animals have been well established in neuroscience [ 9 , 10 ]. An identifying feature of the IMT is the use of skull somatotopies [ 11 ] like that are performed in reflexology [ 12 ] or auriculotherapy [ 13 ]. These somatotopies are reflex points located on the scalp and face, where every region of the body is represented.…”
