Efficacy of Natural Herbal Formulation against Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Penaeus vannamei

Abstract: A formulation was developed using combination of blended natural essential oils as an antiVibrio parahemolyticus causing acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) candidate. Lavandula latifolia, Pinus sylvestris, Jasminum officinale, Citrus limon, Prunus avium, Viola odorata, Gardenia jasminoides, Cocos nucifera, Rosa damascene and Eucalyptus globulus, mixed together to develop as anti-V. parahemolyticus product. The treatment group was fed on essential oil mixed feed whereas control group were fed on th… Show more

“…The rose myrtle, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa , seed extract shown significantly high antimicrobial activity against AHPND bacteria. In addition, the extract was found to improve the survival of L. vannamei against AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus strain [ 121 ]. Later, a study was carried out to determine the effect of plant extract, Phyllanthus amarus , against AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus strain in white leg shrimp, L. vannamei .…”

“…In another study, essential oil mixture prepared from 10 plants, i.e., Lavandula latifolia , Pinus sylvestris , Jasminum officinale , Citrus limon , Prunus avium , Viola odorata , Gardenia jasminoides , Cocos nucifera , Rosa damascene and Eucalyptus globulus , were tested for anti- V. parahaemolyticus activity. The essential oil mixture was found to exhibit antimicrobial activity and significantly improve the survival of L. vanaamei against AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus strain [ 121 ]. Moreover, seaweeds are also reported to display antimicrobial activity against bacterial pathogen and possess several health-benefiting properties.…”

“…Antibiotics have been applied widely in aquaculture to control diseases in aquatic animals, yet the use of antibiotics might cause negative effects such as antibiotic resistance of bacteria and residual of antibiotics in aquaculture products (Lulij wa et al, 2019). Several studies demonstrated medicinal plants could be used as an alternative solution to antibiotics because they contain activate molecules such as alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins and flavonoids which can provide antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic effects, growth enhancement and immunostimulation (Pu et al, 2017, Jha et al, 2016, Babikian et al, 2019.…”

“…The combination of red ginseng saponins with kanamycin or cefotaxime had synergistic or additive effects on S. aureus resistance to methicillin (Sung & Lee, 2008). In addition, blended natural essential oil, seaweed, onion and garlic also had synergistic effects when combined with antibiotics (Jha et al, 2017;Olusola et al, 2013;Vatsos & Rebours, 2015). However, the studies on the combination of NPEs and antibiotics are still being explored.…”
