Efficacy of local phytotherapy in the nonsurgical treatment of periodontal disease: A systematic review

Abstract: Herbal drugs are commonly used in the treatment of several diseases, including periodontitis. So far, no systematic review had evaluated the evidence regarding the efficacy of these agents in the treatment of periodontal disease. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to evaluate the effect of local application of phytotherapic agents as adjuncts to scaling and root planing (SRP), compared to SRP alone, on clinical parameters of chronic periodontal patients. Only randomized controlled trials of at least 3 m… Show more

“…Thus, there is a therapeutic need to increase the defenses in the periodontal tissues and various compounds with antioxidant action are being tested [26]. Adjunctive local phytotherapy has been used in periodontal diseases and has been associated with significant improvement in periodontal clinical parameters (PPD and clinical attachment level) of patients [27]. In this way, resveratrol has demonstrated an antioxidant effect on gingival fibroblasts and in prevention of periodontal diseases progression in pre-clinical studies [28].…”

“…Moreover, local delivery of antimicrobial agents can enhance the suppression of subgingival pathogens [ 57 ]. Non-synthetic antibiotics, as well as phytochemicals, are used to treat periodontitis as adjuncts to nonsurgical treatment [ 58 ]. Therefore, exploring natural products, which are safer than conventional synthetic compounds, is recommended.…”

“…Until today, the only FDA recognized adjuvant therapy for this outcome is subantimicrobial dose doxycycline. Recent research has puts its focus on the benefits of novel local and systemic interventions as adjuncts to traditional scaling and root planning (SRP) (Ritchie et al, 2002, Moro et al, 2018. Below, a summary autophagic interferers that has proven effectiveness as HMTs are from in vitro experiments to in vivo and clinical studies…”
