Efficacy of interdental calibrated brushes on bleeding reduction in adults: a 3-month randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of interdental brushes on the reduction of interproximal bleeding in adults without periodontal disease. Forty-six adults were enrolled in a 3-month, observer-blinded, parallel-group randomized control trial. The test group used a standard manual toothbrush twice daily and an interdental brush daily. The control group used a standard manual toothbrush. At each visit, a calibrated colorimetric probe was used in all interdental spaces to determine the appropriate size of the in… Show more

“…mutans are known to be associated with bacteremia and infective endocarditis [ 88 , 89 ]. Therefore, as previously demonstrated, 34.8% of young periodontally healthy subjects with ID biofilm bled [ 90 ]. The presence of these pathogens in the ID biofilm of young adults represents a danger and must be prevented.…”

“…In daily oral hygiene activities, it is very difficult to reach this space and disrupt the biofilm of a healthy adult especially in the posterior parts of the mouth [ 10 ]. However, updated recommendations for tools and techniques have been recently identified for interdental cleaning, and these approaches aim to reduce interproximal plaque, reduce bleeding, control gingivitis and increase patient motivation and compliance for a more effective prophylaxis and a better quality of life [ 11 ]. Accessibility of interdental spaces of healthy adults with the use of calibrated IDBs has been demonstrated [ 5 ].…”

“…This may be contributed to the easy use of the product. Despite the research showing that other interdental deplaquing methods are just as effective as floss, if not more, in removing plaque, patients may not perceive it that way during use. Participants of this study reported higher agreement in the plaque removal of floss.…”

“…According to De Freitas et al interdental deplaquing should be conducted on a 12‐ to 24‐hour basis to maintain gingival health. Regular interdental plaque control has shown a decrease in inflammation, bleeding, plaque scores, calculus and probing depths …”
