Efficacy of imidazolquinoline on treatment of condyloma acuminatum of the buccal mucosa

Abstract: The condylomata acuminata is a benign epithelial neoplasm induced by papillomavirus, and it is characterized by the proliferation of stratified squamous epithelial tissue that affects the anogenital and oral mucosa. It is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease and has a higher prevalence in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Various therapies have been used for the removal of lesions, such as cryotherapy, surgical laser and surgical excision, which are painful and scarring. These … Show more

“…Lesional excision or destruction using CO 2 laser, electrosurgery, or cryotherapy are additional options, although these methods often induce artifactual changes that compromise the diagnostic capabilities of the pathologist [18]. The use of pharmacologic agents, such as phodophyllum, cidofovir, cimetidine, or imidazolquinoline, is not well-studied in the oral cavity, although case reports tout their success [46,47].…”

“…For these, RCTs and casecontrol studies with large patient sample sizes and longer follow-up periods, as well as standardization of treatment duration and modalities, are needed. Additional HPV-related drug treatments, such as bleomycin, imidazoquinoline, and trichloroacetic acid, do not have application in the oral cavity and scientists appear to have no interest in experimenting with their application [21][22][23]. Furthermore, additional study is needed for applying interferon for long-term prevention of oral HPV recurrence.…”

“…Opciones como terapia laser (CO 2 , Er:Yag, etc), terapia fotodinámica, uso de antimicóticos (bleomicina), agentes queratolíticos (áci-do tricloroacético), inmunomoduladores (imiquimod), entre otros, constituyen también parte del arsenal terapéutico (Lipke;Curi et al, 2017).…”
