Efficacy of essential oils against Varroa destructor infesting Apis mellifera Linn. colonies and their impact on brood development

Abstract: Abstract:Varroa destructor is a dangerous pest directly for beekeeping and indirectly for crops that require insect pollination. The present investigation has been carried out to study the efficacy and persistence of some essential oils and formic acid against Varroa mite in colonies of Apis mellifera Linn. at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. The results revealed that highest mite mortality (77.54 %) with highest brood development (21.74 % increase) recorded in garlic oil followed by turmeric oil (75.84 %) with 15.39 p… Show more

“…The results of this study show that Argus Ras has an average effi cacy of 80.89%, and 80.59% when calculated according to the formula recommended by EMA [20]. This acaricidal effi cacy is rather high, especially in comparison with other previously tested essential oils such as garlic, turmetic, tulsi, ajwin, cinnamon and clove oils, whose effectiveness ranged from 65.00 to 77.54% [22] or jasmine, black cumin and neem oils which showed effectiveness from 24 to 35% [23]. Effect of Argus Ras in this study (80.89%) was signifi cantly lower (z=10.921, p<0.001) (Figure 4) than the effect observed with Amitraz (95.72%).…”

“…The results of this study show that the Hive Clean ® formulation has an average efficiency of 91.25% after split summer treatments. This varroacidal efficiency is higher than previous tests of its main individual components, applied under different field conditions: oxalic acid (TOUFAILIA et al, 2015); formic acid (PIETROPAOLI and FORMATO, 2017), or various essential oils (ALLAM et al, 2003;GOSWAMI et al, 2014). The number of fallen V. destructor mites after three Hive Clean ® split treatments (Fig.…”

“…Since V. destructor mites have developed resistance to the most widely used synthetic active ingredients of acaricides (SAMMATARO et al, 2005;MAGGI et al, 2010), and in order to avoid the accumulation of chemicals residues in hive products (LODESANI et al 2008;MULLIN et al 2010), beekeepers are extremely interested in alternative treatments with substances of natural origin with varroacidal effects (i.e. soft acaracides), such as organic acids, plant extracts, essential oils and their components (GOSWAMI et al, 2014;RUFFINENGO et al, 2014;STANIMIROVIĆ et al, 2017;TLAK GAJGER et al, 2013). Eco friendly, natural products have certain advantages after repeated use, such as the lower risk of honey and beeswax contamination, or the small possibility of inducing V. destructor mite resistance.…”

“…Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman adalah tungau parasit lebah madu yang paling merugikan secara ekonomi pada budidaya Apis mellifera di seluruh dunia (Locke, 2012;Martin et al et al ., 2012;Gonzáles-Cabrera ., 2016), tidak terkecuali di Indonesia (Kuntadi & Andadari, 2013). Upaya pengendalian hama secara kimiawi dalam jangka panjang terbukti menimbulkan efek resisten pada tungau tersebut (Adjlane ., et al 2013;Asha & Sharma, 2014;Goswami ., et al 2014;Gonzáles-Cabrera ., 2016;Kamler et al et al ., 2016) dan residunya berisiko mencemari produk yang dihasilkan dari peternakan lebah madu ( ; Howis & Ҫobanoğlu & Tüze, 2008Nowakowski, 2009Medici ., 2012;et al Mahmood ., 2014;Ostiguy & Eitzer, 2014;et al Boi ., 2016).…”
