Efficacy of a topical gel containing chitosan, chlorhexidine, allantoin and dexpanthenol for pain and inflammation control after third molar surgery: A randomized and placebo-controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the postoperative effect of a topic gel containing chlorhexidine, chitosan, allantoine and dexpanthenol versus a placebo for pain and inflammation control after third molar surgery. Material and Methods A gel combining 0.2% chlorhexdine, 0.5% chitosan, 5% dexpanthenol, 0.15% allantoin and 0.01% sodium saccharin was selected for this split mouth randomized controlled and double-blind trial including 36 patients… Show more

“…Regarding the trismus associated with postoperative LTMS, Saez et al compared a chitosan gel against a placebo, observing a lower limitation in the experimental group [42], unlike other authors who used cryotherapy [43], or herbal extracts composed of drugs [44], who did not observe differences between the groups. This clinical trial reported differences significantly lower in the control group than in the experimental group at 72 h postoperatively (p = 0.008).…”

“…There were some limitations in this study. First, due to the development of the internet, it was easier for patients to obtain methods to improve the quality of life after surgery from the network, such physiotherapy as ice compress and chlorhexidine-based mouthwash [ 32 , 33 ]. Second, dental anxiety was not assessed preoperatively, which was associated with pain and affects quality of life [ 34 ].…”

“…Thus, HA might help the healing phases and reduce the level of inflammation in the context of oral surgeries [ 5 , 6 ]. The anti-inflammatory effect may be due to the action of exogenous HA as a scavenger to drain prostaglandins, metalloproteinases, and other bio-active molecules [ 7 ]. The antiedematous effect may also be related to the osmotic activity [ 8 ].…”
