Efficacy of a novel topical combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel against fleas in cats, under field conditions

Abstract: Esafoxolaner is a purified afoxolaner enantiomer with insecticidal and acaricidal properties. It is combined with eprinomectin and praziquantel, nematodicidal and cestodicidal compounds, in a novel topical endectoparasiticide formulation for cats. This novel formulation was tested in four field studies, in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia. In all studies, naturally flea-infested domestic cats were treated with the novel formulation at the label dose and conditions of use. The main objective, iden… Show more

“…Broadline Ò has been used safely for several years [8] and was demonstrated to be efficacious against a broad spectrum of feline parasites, including fleas [1] and gastro-intestinal helminths [13,24]. NexGard Ò Combo was recently developed and registered in the European Union [9] and was demonstrated to be efficacious against fleas in experimental infestation studies conducted with isolates originating from France, South Africa and the USA [25], and in field studies with naturally infested cats from Europe, the USA and Australia [27], and against gastrointestinal helminths using induced and natural models of infection with isolates originating from Europe, North America and South Africa [12]. The safety of NexGard Ò Combo was also comprehensively demonstrated, namely in specific target animal safety studies [10,26].…”

“…Afoxolaner was also demonstrated to be efficacious against flying hematophagous insects that do not live on the host, i.e. the sandfly (Phlebotomus perniciosus) [29], mosquito (Aedes aegypti) [23], stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) [36], kissing bug (Triatoma infestans) [24] and bedbug (C. lectularius) [2]. Eprinomectin, the nematocide compound, and praziquantel, the cestocide compound of the product, have insignificant and no potency on arthropods, respectively, when administered in combination with esafoxolaner (unpublished internal data).…”
