Efficacy of a novel topical combination of fipronil, (S)-methoprene, eprinomectin and praziquantel against adult and immature stages of the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) on cats

Abstract: The efficacy of a novel topical combination of fipronil 8.3% (w/v), (S)-methoprene 10% (w/v), eprinomectin 0.4% (w/v) and praziquantel 8.3% (w/v) (BROADLINE(®)) was tested against adult and immature stages of Ctenocephalides felis fleas in six studies. For that purpose, fleas from different colonies from North America, Germany and South Africa were used to induce infestations in cats under laboratory conditions. In each study, between 12 and 16 cats were allocated randomly to 2 groups. Cats in Group 1 were not… Show more

“…A combination of fipronil/methoprene/epinomectin/praziquantel applied to cats to control five different strains of C. felis provided 94.3% efficacy at 24 h and >95.9% kill when fleas were counted at 24 h 5 weeks later. The treatment reduced the emergence of new fleas for at least 5 weeks [ 388 ].…”

“…The novel topical combination would appear to offer a highly effective product for convenient administration in one spot to treat the most common parasitic infections of cats as its spectrum of activity covers not only adult and developing nematodes and cestodes but also ectoparasites, i.e. fleas and ticks (Baker et al, 2014;Tielemans et al, 2014b). The results demonstrate that fipronil, (S)-methoprene, eprinomectin and praziquantel, when administered once as topical solution to cats infected with nematodes and/or cestodes, is highly efficacious against a broad range of important nematode and cestode parasites and demonstrates excellent safety under field conditions.…”

“…Fipronil/ (S)-methoprene and esafoxolaner provide insecticide and acaricide properties, eprinomectin and praziquantel provide nematodicide and cestodicide properties, respectively. Broadline Ò has been used safely for several years [8] and was demonstrated to be efficacious against a broad spectrum of feline parasites, including fleas [1] and gastro-intestinal helminths [13,24]. NexGard Ò Combo was recently developed and registered in the European Union [9] and was demonstrated to be efficacious against fleas in experimental infestation studies conducted with isolates originating from France, South Africa and the USA [25], and in field studies with naturally infested cats from Europe, the USA and Australia [27], and against gastrointestinal helminths using induced and natural models of infection with isolates originating from Europe, North America and South Africa [12].…”
