Efficacy comparison between toric intraocular lens and aspheric intraocular lens plus steep-axis incision in cataract patients with low corneal astigmatism

Abstract: Background: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and aspheric IOL implantation with steep-axis incision for correcting mild to moderate corneal astigmatism in cataract patients. Methods: A prospective, single-center, open label, randomized, two-arm study was designed. Cataract patients with corneal astigmatism of 1.0-2.0D were enrolled and divided into test and control groups. The test group had the AcrySof ® IQ Toric IOL implanted and the cont… Show more

“…17 There are several publications in the literature with similar scientific approaches regarding corneal astigmatisms. Some examples are the publications of Levitz et al, Buscocio et al, and Liu et al [18][19][20] The major difference in all studies compared with ours is that there has been no direct comparison between a toric group and a nontoric group. Liu et al had also one group with a nontoric lens, but steep-axis incisions were performed to correct corneal astigmatism.…”

“…The emergence of a new Toric IOL provides conditions for cataract surgery to treat astigmatism at the same time (7)(8)(9). The principle of Toric IOL is to superimpose a cylindrical lens of appropriate power in the direction of the maximum refractive power of the cornea to correct astigmatism (10). In recent years, there have been many reports at home and abroad comparing the clinical efficacy of Toric IOL implantation and traditional IOL implantation in the treatment of cataract.…”

“…Cataract is the number one cause of blindness in the world (Liu et al, 2021). Fibrosis of the lens is the main cause of cataract, including anterior capsular cataract (ASC) and posterior capsular opacity (PCO) (Singh, Badakere, Patil‐Chhablani, & Kekunnaya, 2021).…”
