Efficacy and Safety of Resveratrol in Type 1 Diabetes Patients: A Two-Month Preliminary Exploratory Trial

Abstract: Resveratrol has been reported to be beneficial against diabetes complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of resveratrol in decreasing hyperglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) by a preliminary investigation designed as an exploratory clinical trial. Thirteen patients with T1D from both the sexes participated in this trial. All patients received resveratrol in 500 mg capsules, twice daily for 60 days. Bodyweight, fasting blood sugar (FBS), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), insuli… Show more

“…Resveratrol was also found beneficial in type 1 diabetic patients. A two-month trial with 500 mg capsules of resveratrol, administered twice a day reported beneficial effects, such as a reduction in HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin), FBS (fasting blood sugar), and oxidative stress marker levels [ 179 ]. A recent meta-analysis even highlighted that in type 2 diabetic patients, resveratrol can reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) levels [ 180 ].…”

“…Between the baseline and the endpoint resveratrol, treatment was associated with a significant decrease in the level of MDA and a significant increase in the level of total antioxidant capacity. There was no change in the serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta [ 132 ].…”

“…Specifically, resveratrol has been shown to maintain the integrity of the blood–brain barrier in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice [ 80 ], to confer neuroprotection in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis [ 81 ], to prevent type 1 diabetes in nonobese diabetic mice [ 82 ], and to reduce inflammation in a rheumatoid arthritis mouse model [ 83 ]. Clinical studies on the use of resveratrol against autoimmune diseases are also emerging in rheumatoid arthritis [ 84 ] and in type 1 diabetes [ 85 ].…”
