The Role of Resveratrol in Liver Disease: A Comprehensive Review from In Vitro to Clinical Trials

Abstract: Many studies have shown that resveratrol has a lot of therapeutic effects on liver disorders. Its administration can significantly increase the survival rate after liver transplantation, reduce fat deposition and ischemia-induced necrosis and apoptosis in Wistar rats. Resveratrol can provide Liver protection against chemical, cholestatic, and alcohol-mediated damage. It can improve glucose metabolism and lipid profile, reduce liver fibrosis, and steatosis. Additionally, it is capable of altering the fatty acid… Show more

“…Figures 4 and 5 show that MS is associated with an increase in liver fibrosis compared to the Control group, and the administration of RSV + QRC mixture reverted this effect. Our results are in line with experimental and clinical evidence which suggests that RSV and QRC attenuate liver inflammation and fibrosis [28,38,39].…”

“…Extensive evidence has demonstrated the beneficial effect of polyphenols on the treatment of cardiometabolic disorders. The mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of RSV and QRC have not yet been fully elucidated and have mainly been related to epigenetic processes, intrinsic antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms [23,24,28]. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are not reports on the effect of RSV and QRC on the pathways analyzed in this paper.…”

“…e antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol have been demonstrated in numerous studies [79] though clinical efficacy has also been argued [80,81]. e efficacy of resveratrol in treating different liver diseases has been comprehensively reviewed by Izzo and coworkers [82]. Despite the potential benefits, the oral bioavailability of resveratrol is very low.…”

“…[ 225 ] The investigation of proper dose range should therefore be kept in mind while planning clinical trials. At this point, we would like to stress that it pays to look at resveratrol in its entire role in liver diseases and hereby recommend the excellent and very recent review by Izzo et al [ 226 ].…”
