Malaria disease is a pathology which occurs as a result of the oxidative stress. Three plants of the Ivorian pharmacopoeia are particularly used in the traditional medicine for the treatment of malaria in Côte d'Ivoire. They are Cochlospermum planchonii (Placo), Pericopsis laxiflora (Laper) and Harungana madagascariensis (Madhar).The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity of the aqueous and methanolic extracts of three medicinal plants of Côte d'Ivoire. The quantitative measurement of total flavonoids gave the following results: Laper (560.80 mg QE/g ± 7.40), Madhar (352.50 mg QE/g ± 9.46) and Placo (314.20 mg QE/g ± 4.41). The total polyphenols were more concentrated in Laper (262.50 mg GAE/g ± 9.47) and Placo (203.20 mg GAE/g ± 2.21). Noticeable zinc content was found in Laper (13.56 ppm) and Placo (11.40 ppm) against 3.43 ppm in Madhar. The radical scavenging activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and antiradical power measurement by ABTS (2,2' azino bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay have showed good activity for Laper (IC 50 = 7.50 µg/mL) and placo (IC 50 = 8.01 µg/mL). The standard antioxidant compound (quercetin) gave an IC 50 = 4.00 µg/mL. This study suggested that the high content of total flavonoids, total phenols and minerals in these plants could partly justify the therapeutic use of at least two of the three plants.

Mitragyna ciliata (MYTA) is a Rubiaceae used in traditional medicine to treat malaria. Total methanolic extract of MYTA made was used for toxicological studies on laboratory mice and rats. The extract of MYTA was administered intraperitoneally. The doses ranged from 0 to 4000 mg/kg body weight (bw) (i.e., 0, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg/kg bw) for acute toxicity, and from 0 to 475 mg/kg body weight (bw) (i.e., 0, 125, 250 and 475 mg/kg bw) for subacute toxicity studies. Following administration of high doses, the mice had jerky movements and died lying on their belly. The maximal tolerated dose (MTD) obtained was 500 mg/kg of bw, whereas 50% lethal dose (LD 50) was 1412 mg/kg of bw. The study of the effects of MYTA on the complete blood count, blood glucose and the serum markers ((urea, uric acid, creatinine, transaminases (GOT, GPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatinine phosphokinase (CPK)) of noble organs of rats was performed. The results obtained with the serum enzymes (GOT, GPT, ALP, CPK and LDH) showed that no significant increase of activity occurred. This indicated that the heart and liver might not have suffered damages. Besides, significant decreases were observed in the serum activities of GOT, ALP and LDH, suggesting that MYTA could have a potential hepatoprotective effect. Nevertheless, significant increases were observed in the serum concentration of urea, uric acid and creatinine at high doses. This indicates the accumulation of these metabolites in the blood, which could be due to kidney injury, leading to a decrease in renal elimination of waste.

Nowadays, many medicinal plants have proved effective in combating the phenomenon of bacterial multi-resistance against conventional antibiotics. However, the use of these plants, traditionally is done without precise doses. And this inaccuracy of dose is a real problem of traditional medicine. Thus prospecting for empirically administered plant extract requires dosage monitoring to avoid the risk of a fatal therapeutic accident. It is in this context that the study of the toxicity of Terminalia macroptera which presents itself as an anti-infectious agent, capable of overcoming certain strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has been initiated. The objective of this study is to evaluate the toxicity of 70% ethanol extract of T.macroptera in rats and to deduce its safety. With regard to the evaluation of the toxicity, rats were used whose mass varies between 100 and 170 grams. Then, using OECD Guideline 425, (2006), acute toxicity was achieved. Then the 100, 300 and 500 mg / kg bm doses were used in sub-acute toxicity to evaluate biochemical and hematological parameters. The results show an LD50> 5000 mg / kg bm. Therefore, according to the OECD classification, the hydroethanolic extract belongs to category 5, non-toxic substances. Also, the biochemical and hematological results revealed that the extract did not change at any time at P <0.05, biochemical marker levels (UREE, ASAT, ALAT, CK and LDH), reflecting vital organs of the body. So the extract would have no effect on the heart, liver and kidneys. 70% ethanol extract of T. macroptera would be safe for use as a drug and therefore could contribute to the production of Traditionally Enhanced Medicines (MTAs).
