Effects on a Nearby Bridge of Dismantling Temporary Lining During Excavation of a Shallow-Buried Rectangular Tunnel

Abstract: It is almost inevitable that when a tunnel is excavated in an urban area, it will pass under an existing bridge. During tunnel excavation, a temporary lining is installed and subsequently removed. However, dismantling temporary lining may affect the stability of a nearby bridge. A numerical model was created and tests were conducted on a large-scale physical model to investigate the effects of dismantling temporary lining on a nearby bridge structure. A novel method of modeling the restraining force at the top… Show more

“…After the freezing started, the ground deformation was small, because the soil was not frozen in the early stage. At that time, the ground settlement caused by the shield was greater Sheng et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2021b;Wang J. et al, 2022) and the farther away from the frozen end, the greater the settlement. After 30 days of freezing, the frozen-curtain crossing circle was basically completed.…”

“…Nowadays, a tunnel is designed and constructed towards large span and section to accommodate various needs 1 – 7 , and the lining is vital to the tunnel stability during construction 8 10 . When excavating a large-section tunnel in a weak stratum 11 , the temporary lining is usually employed to reduce the span with the help of various sequential excavation methods, which include the center diaphragm method 12 , the center cross diaphragm method 13 , 14 , the side drift method 15 , 16 , and other tunneling methods 17 20 .
