Effects of various denture cleansers on surface roughness of hard permanent reline resins

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of denture cleansers on surface roughness (Ra, µm) of two hard permanent reline resins and a conventional acrylic denture base resin. Fifty specimens of each material, measuring 10 mm×2 mm were randomly divided into 1 control and 4 experimental subgroups (n=10). Surface roughness values were measured using profilometer before and after immersion in distilled water and in 4 different denture cleansers for 8 h for 140 days. The Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon Si… Show more

“…Furthermore, if the roughness was measured only on the brushed area, it is possible to obtain a relatively high roughness value comparable with values obtained by other researchers 6,22,28) . Although chemical and mechanical cleaning methods have yielded significant sterilizing effect on denture bases 33) , they also produce some negative impacts. Out of these negative impacts, the surface roughness of the material has been mostly investigated because a higher roughness causes adherence and maturation of bacterial biofilm as well as the accompanying diseases 33) .…”

Out of these negative impacts, the surface roughness of the material has been mostly investigated because a higher roughness causes adherence and maturation of bacterial biofilm as well as the accompanying diseases 33) . Therefore, it is important to select suitable denture materials and denture cleanser to ensure a good denture.…”

“…The roughening effect of cleansers was significantly evident with Steradent which produced the roughest uncoated PMMA surface. The increase in surface roughness caused by denture cleansers has been reported in the literature before, especially regarding alkaline peroxide-based solutions 26,28,37) . When the alkaline peroxide reacts with water it produces a solution of hydrogen peroxide and nascent oxygen.…”

“…Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of denture cleansers to reduce biofilm formation, making them a necessary adjunct in removable prostheses hygiene 9,[22][23][24][25] . While denture cleansing agents can be important for maintaining denture hygiene and preventing colonization, they can have deleterious effects on the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA 26,27) , especially leading to an increase in surface roughness 28) . Surface roughness is defined as "the average absolute deviation of roughness irregularities from the main line over one sampling length" 29) .…”

“…The problem with conventional denture cleansers is that they change the physical properties of the denture materials when used for long periods 22, 23, 24. PMMA disk as a denture base-resin was treated with the chemical cleanser and the denture cleaning device for 150 days, and the physical properties of the denture base-resin were analyzed.…”
