Effects of Typified Propolis on Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli: a Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Objective-The aim of this study was to determine in a randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled clinical trial the effects of typified propolis and chlorhexidine rinses on salivary levels of mutans streptococci (MS) and lactobacilli (LACT).Methods-One hundred patients were screened for salivary levels of MS >100,000 CFUs/mL of saliva. All patients presented with at least one cavitated decayed surface. Sixty patients met entry criteria. Subjects were adults 18-55 years old. After restoration of cavitated lesi… Show more

“…Al-Sultan et al concluded that an aqueous extract of propolis as a topical agent following lower third molar extraction had a slight reducing effect on the severity of postoperative complications [ 39 ]. It was observed that Brazilian propolis mouthrinse was effective in suppressing cariogenic infections as well as reducing gingival inflammation [ 40 , 41 ]. There is a granted patent in Brazil about products elaborated with Brazilian green propolis for use in dentistry [ 42 ].…”

“…Useful knowledge about propolis has been gathered from research in the fields of medicine, pharmacology, food sciences and chemistry [ 2 , 3 ]. In dentistry, some work has been published on endodontics [ 4 , 5 ], preventive dentistry [ 6 , 7 ], cariology [ 3 , 6 ], surgery [ 8 ], and periodontics [ 9 , 10 ], but there is a shortage of studies in the field of restorative dentistry.…”

“…Brazilian RP has potent antimicrobial activity even at low concentrations (0.1 and 1.0%). Several studies have proved the effective action of Brazilian RP against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus [ 3 , 7 , 17 19 ] attributed to the high concentration of flavonoids and phenolic compounds in Brazilian RP [ 20 ]. The best results were obtained with an acetone fraction of an alcoholic extract of Brazilian propolis, possibly because of its high polarity; the acetone fraction contains a greater amount of active phenolics, which increases the antimicrobial activity [ 21 ].…”

“…Another study from 2013 compared 0.12% chlorhexidine with propolis at a much lower concentration, namely, 2%. Its antimicrobial activity against S. mutans and L. acidofilus was confirmed [ 43 ]. These studies proved the cariostatic properties of propolis, antiperiodontal pathogen activity, and efficiency at lower concentrations.…”
