“…Although TGF-β1 stimulation induces the proliferation of PDL cells (Brady et al 1998;Okubo et al 2003) and the expression of ECM components in PDL cells (Worapamorn et al 2001;Fujita et al 2004), the effects of TGF-β1 on differentiation and fiber production of PDL cells in the process of PDL regeneration are not fully understood. Hou et al (2009) have reported that TGF-β1 gene transfer into bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells accelerates the regeneration of ligament/tendon defects through the upregulation of Col I and type III collagen. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TGF-β1 might be important in the proliferation and differentiation of PDL cells for the induction of the fiber synthesis necessary to regenerate PDL tissues.…”
