Effects of traditional Chinese medicine formula on ruminal fermentation, enzyme activities and nutrient digestibility of beef cattle

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate effects of traditional Chinese medicine formula (TCMF) combined with several herbs on ruminal fermentation, enzyme activities and nutrient digestibility. Twenty finishing bulls were assigned to control or different TCMFs (Yufeisan-1, -2, -3; 2.5% dry matter (DM) in concentrate). Results showed that DM intake was higher (P < 0.05) in the Yufeisan-3 group than others. Compared to control, apparent digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber were increased (P < … Show more

“…An increase in propionic acid and propionic acid-to-acetic acid ratio was observed in this study, which is often observed as a result of enhanced digestion of fiber and the proliferation of microorganisms in the rumen and may induce changes in metabolic pathways and better rumen fermentation ( Christensen et al, 2015 ). This finding is in agreement with the findings reported by Zhu et al (2018) and Liang et al (2019) , who suggested that Chinese herbal mixture feed additives improved rumen fermentation, mainly by increasing the concentration of propionic acid and the ratio of propionic acid to acetic acid. Notably, propionate is the main source of glucose for ruminants ( den Besten et al, 2013 ), which may explain the improved carcass characteristics, especially net meat percentage, observed in the RE group in the present study.…”

“…Tan et al [12] showed that LBP extracts could improve the growth performance of sh. Numerous literature reports have con rmed that herbs improve feed utilization and thus, animal growth performance by regulating the e ciency of rumen fermentation [13,14] and by in uencing animal feed intake and digestive enzyme secretion [15].…”
