Effects of Topographic and Soil Factors on Woody Species Assembly in a Chinese Subtropical Evergreen Broadleaved Forest

Abstract: Evergreen broadleaved forests in subtropical China contain a complicated structure of diverse species. The impact of topographic and soil factors on the assembly of woody species in the forest has been poorly understood. We used Ripley's K(t) function to analyze the spatial patterns and associations of dominant species and residual analysis (RDA) to quantify the contribution of topography and soil to species assembly. The 1 ha plot investigated had 4797 stems with a diameter at breast height (dbh) larger than… Show more

“…The subtropical mountain forest investigated in 45 plots in this study had 5155 stems (DBH ≥ 5 cm) from 204 species of 104 genera and 50 families, which supports reports that subtropical mountain forests contain a higher diversity of tree species [37][38][39]. The warm needle-leaved forest contained a significant lower diversity of tree species and lower Pielou's evenness in the LLRB, which was consistent with a previous suggestion by Wang et al (i.e., that its species parabolic low and species richness are extremely low) [23].…”

“…Represented graphically, this pattern forms an inverted-J shape. This is characteristic of a forest wherein trees regenerate consistently as found in previous studies [ 71 74 ]. This is a positive indicator of future natural regeneration of tree species in the forests [ 9 , 75 , 76 ].…”

“…The basin has complicated topographic features, and is surrounded by mountains and hills in the eastern, southern, and western parts of the basin and dominated by flat terrains in the central and northern parts. The basin has a humid mid-subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasonality [53,54]. The mean annual temperature is approximately 17.5 • C with a mean annual precipitation of 1400 mm.…”
