“…The linear distance between the cemento–enamel junction and the alveolar bone crest (an indicator of alveolar bone loss) was measured using a microgrid at a magnification of × 200 . The numbers of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (an indicator of inflammation), gingival fibroblasts and bFGF‐positive fibroblasts per unit area (0.1 mm 2 ) of the connective tissue subjacent to the junctional epithelium were determined under a magnification of × 400 .…”

“…Considering the better understanding of the participation of host immune-inflammatory mediators in disease progression, the use of modulating agents as an adjunctive therapy to the periodontal treatment has been encouraged to provide innovative visions of the management of periodontitis [5,21,22,37,38]. In this context, the use of C. verbenacea, a medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial proprieties, could represent a promising future strategy in treating periodontal diseases.…”

“…Digital quantification of the positive expression of ICAM‐1, FGFR‐1, MMP‐1, and MMP‐8 to the area of JE was quantified by automated counting with an image analyzer ¶¶ . FGFR‐1‐, MMP‐1‐, and MMP‐8‐positive cells per unit area (0.1 × 0.1 mm each) of PCT subjacent to JE were determined under a magnification of ×400 17 …”

“…Digital images of the sections were transferred to a microcomputer and analyzed using the image analyzer. Measurements were performed in standard areas (0.1 × 0.1 mm each) subjacent to the JE 17 . Polarization colors were determined separately for thin (≤0.8 μm) and thick (1.6 to 2.4 μm) fibers.…”
