Zwischen den Größen (ΔH i≠ − ΔH s≠) und (ΔS i≠ − ΔS s≠) der radikalischen Polymerisation eines Monomeren in verschiedenen Lösungsmitteln besteht ein Kompensationseffekt
ΔH i≠, ΔH s≠, ΔS i≠ und ΔS s≠ sind dabei die Aktivierungsenthalpien bzw. ‐entropien der Bildung iso‐ bzw. syndiotaktischer Diaden. Die Größen ΔΔH 0≠ und T0 sind definitionsgemäß unabhängig von der Polymerisationstemperatur und anderen äußeren Bedingungen und daher für jedes Monomere charakteristische Konstanten. Es wurde nun gefunden, daß für die Reihe der Acrylverbindungen einerseits und die Reihe der Vinylverbindungen andereseits je eine lineare Beziehung zwischen ΔΔH 0≠ und T0 besteht.
Für die Stereokontrolle sind vermutlich sowohl echte Aktivierungsgrößen als auch konformative Effekte verantwortlich.
