Effects of the pH on growth and morphology of Anabaenopsis elenkinii Miller (Cyanobacteria) isolated from the alkaline shallow lake of the Brazilian Pantanal.

Abstract: Anabaenopsis elenkiniiMiller forms bloom in the alkaline shallow lakes of the Brazilian Pantanal. The A. elenkinii CCIBT1059 strain was isolated from one of these alkaline lakes and the experiments were made in growth chamber during 30 days, under modified medium BG-11 (3 % NaNO 3 ), temperature 25 ºC, photoperiod 12-12 light-dark cycle and irradiance of 80-100 µmol photons m -2 s -1 at three different pH values: 7.0, 9.5 and 10.5. In relation to growth rate and cell yield the higher values were observed at pH… Show more

“…The occurrence of heterocytes was observed in all treatments, but akinetes were never formed. Results indicate that A. elenkinii is typical of alkaline systems and also that in lower pH values the growth limitation can occur in terms of number of cells and biomass (Souza Santos et al, 2011).…”

“…There are some modified media with slight change of composition and ingredients from the conventional media were also reported. Souza Santos (2011) studied non-axenic strain and used modified liquid medium of BG-11 (3% NaNO3 indicated as BG-11m) (Souza Santos et al, 2011). Prasanna and Kumar (2006) screened the growth potential of 27 strains of Anabaena in the N-free BG-11 medium and reported 20 strains were made axenic by repeated antibiotic treatments (Prasanna et al, 2006).…”

“…Accordingly, this vegetation cover is absent in the saline–alkaline lakes in Pantanal (Santos and Sant’anna 2010, de Souza Santos et al. 2011). As a consequence, the novel strains are morphologically different from the others morphology‐related Leptolyngbyaceae genera due the following diagnostic traits: trichomes shape (moniliforms with deep constriction) and arrangement (mats with trichomes densely entangled in the center and loosely arranged in the periphery) as well as by the extreme environment where the strains were recovered (saline–alkaline lakes with pH above 9 at the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands).…”

“…Although the normal pH range for safe irrigation is 6.5-8.4 [67], different pH ranges are used in the agricultural water reuse regulations and guidelines (Table 8 and Figure 2). Recycled water outside the normal pH range might result in nutritional imbalance, which may alter the crops growth and health, and facilitate the corrosion in pipelines, sprinklers, and control valves [4,[138][139][140][141]. Lower pH makes heavy metals move easier in the soil, contaminating crops, and water bodies [142].…”
