Background: Excessive exercise cause a deterioration of organ function and structure. Overtraining will cause reduce antioxidant reserve and excess free radical production. In this condition, there will be a decrease in the number of Leydig cells in the testis and followed by a decrease in testosterone level. Bali robusta coffee extract contains active compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and polyphenols. This study aims to prove whether Bali robusta coffee extract (Coffea canephora) can prevent a decrease in the number of Leydig cells and testosterone levels in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) with excessive physical training. Methods: Thirty-six rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control group (placebo aquabidest 2 ml) and the treatment group (Bali robusta coffee extract of 1 gram/kg BW). Both groups received excessive physical training in the form of swimming until the subjects experienced fatigue for 21-days. Results: The results showed that the mean of Leydig cell number in the treatment group was significantly higher, which was 3.70 ± 0.89 cell/field of view, compared to the control group, which was 2.92 ± 0.65 cell/field of view (p = 0.005). The mean testosterone level in the treatment group was also significantly higher, which was 6.32 ± 0.21 nmol/ml, compared to the control group, which was 1.95 ± 0.32 nmol/ml (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The administration of Bali robusta coffee extract (Coffea canephora) prevented a decrease in the number of Leydig cells and testosterone levels in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) with excessive physical training.

This study aims to determine the effect of given robusta coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) leaf extract on the spermatozoa quality of mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed to cigarette smoke. The experiment was using a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and each consisted of six mice as replications. Each treatment was K- (without exposure to cigarette smoke), K+ (exposure to cigarette smoke + 0.5% Na-CMC), P1 (exposure to cigarette smoke + Robusta coffee leaf extract at a dose of 60 mg/kgbw), P2 (exposure to cigarette smoke + Robusta coffee leaf extract at a dose of 120 mg/kgbw) and P3 (exposure to cigarette smoke + Robusta coffee leaf extract at a dose of 180 mg/kgbw). On the 36th day, mice were taken down by anesthesia and followed by surgery to collect spermatozoa. The parameters for this observation were the concentration, motility, viability, morphology, and integrity of the spermatozoa membrane. The data obtained were analyzed statistically with One Way Anova and further tested with DMRT. The results showed that the treatment of robusta coffee leaf exstract in mice exposed to cigarette smoke had a significant effect (P<0,05) on the quality of spermatozoa.

Coffee presents a valuable food product for several reasons, covering areas like a source of health benefits substances for the human body, brain energizing/stimulating product and its social aspect raising from coffee consumption. This study aims to summarise the most common practices used in coffee adulteration and the methods focused to confirm the authenticity of the coffee, the quality, and price determinants according to a place of origin and/or selection between Robusta versus Arabica coffee beans. Nowadays, several scientific approaches are used for this purpose, based on chemical or molecular analysis. Literature and the data presented in this article were collected from studies published in scientific journals. On the other hand, the article introduces how to protect customer\s rights in the global coffee trade.
