Effects of Synthetic Insecticides and Crude Botanicals Extracts on Cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on Cabbage

Abstract: The study was conducted to evaluate the insecticidal action of two new chemical insecticides and three locally available botanicals. These materials were evaluated for their efficacy against cabbage aphids, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), under laboratory and field conditions. The laboratory result revealed that Lambda Cyhalothrin (Triger 5 E.C TM ) and Emamectin benzoate (Cutter 112 E.C TM ) were non-significant difference from the standard check within 1 day after application. The field results showed between th… Show more

“…Synthetic chemical insecticides have been used for many years in the control of aphids and are currently available (Shiberu and Negeri, 2016). Nevertheless, use of synthetic chemicals promotes development of pesticide resistance in the target pests (Belmain et al, 2013), pest resurgence and emergence of secondary pests.…”

“…Nevertheless, use of synthetic chemicals promotes development of pesticide resistance in the target pests (Belmain et al, 2013), pest resurgence and emergence of secondary pests. Synthetic pesticides affect non-target insect species (Shiberu and Negeri, 2016), cause food and groundwater contaminations, pollution and pesticide residue, which accumulate in beneficial organisms and human beings (Georghiou, 2000). They have high costs and associated toxicity risks which discourage rape growers from integrating them in their pest management system (Canhilal et al, 2006).…”

“…The total numbers of cabbage aphids were counted with the help of a hand lens a day before each treatment application. Mean number of cabbage aphids per plant (efficacy of treatments) were calculated (Shiberu and Mulugeta, 2016).…”

“…Among them, two economically important insects can be distinguished – cabbage root fly ( Delia radicum L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) and cabbage aphid ( Brevicoryne brassicae L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae). The cabbage aphid is one of the most important and commonly occurring insect pests of rapeseed worldwide [ 7 ]. Brevicoryne brassicae causes significant yield losses in many crops in the family Brassicaceae , including mustards and crucifers.…”
