Effects of Substrate Surface Functionality on Solution-Deposited Titania Films

Abstract: Liquid-phase deposition (LPD) from aqueous solution, under mild conditions of temperature (e55 °C) and pH (2.88-3.88), can produce thin (0.1-1.0 µm), adherent titania (TiO 2 ) films. This paper reports a systematic study of LPD TiO 2 films on variously prepared silicon wafer substrates, including (to our knowledge for the first time with LPD) several types of sulfonated surfaces (including sulfonated self-assembled monolayers and sulfonated polyelectrolyte multilayers). The growth rate and crystallinity of the… Show more

“…40 For the adhesion of TiO 2 films to silanol groups, the pH of the deposition solution is critical. Pizem et al 13 reported that adherent TiO 2 films formed from solutions similar to those used here at pH=3.9, but that the films were less adherent at pH=2.9. They related this difference www.intechopen.com Nanofabrication 8 in adherence to an increased electrostatic attraction of TiO 2 to the oxidized surface of silicon at the higher pH.…”

“…(a) and low electrostatic attraction. 13 However, some depositions were observed on octadecyl group regions in SEM micrographs. One probable cause is that pinholes and other defects in the films provide at least some degree of access of water to underlying unreacted OH groups in the OTS films.…”

“…Many techniques for the synthesis of ceramic thin films from aqueous solutions at low temperatures (25 -100 8C) have been reported [2,3] The main techniques for non-electrochemical synthesis of polycrystalline ceramic films from aqueous solutions at low temperatures, and some of the materials produced using them, are as follows [1] [4,5] but is being increasingly studied as a route for films of oxides such as TiO 2 [6 -13] and others [2].…”
