Effects of Subconjunctival Bevacizumab on Corneal Neovascularization

Abstract: Short-term results suggest that subconjunctival bevacizumab can be used safely and effectively for corneal neovascularization resulting from different ocular surface disorders, providing an additional strategy to improve success of corneal grafts.

“…Patients received up to three injections of 2.5 mg of bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 mL subconjunctival and 1.25 mg/0.05 mL intrastromal). Injections were safe and well-tolerated and all patients showed a reduction in neovascularized area 61. Moreover, subconjunctival bevacizumab has been used in combination with PDT using verteporfin and showed a notable decrease in corneal neovascularization and evidence of vascular thrombosis 62.…”

“…6 Herpes simpleks keratiti (HSK) de sıklıkla korneal NV oluşumuna neden olur ve batı ülkelerinde korneal körlüğün en sık enfeksiyöz kaynaklı nedenidir. 7 Sıklıkla stromal herpes simpleks enfeksiyonuna bağlı olarak korneal NV gelişmektedir. HSK tedavisinde korneal NV, hastalık seyrinde önemli olup, antianjiyojenik ajanların kullanılması gerekebilir.…”

“…Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is thought to be one of the key mediators in the process of NV, and the effects of anti-VEGF antibodies have been demonstrated on various experimental corneal NV models (for review see Gupta and Illingworth 2011). So far, anti-VEGF antibodies have been licensed exclusively for vitreoretinal diseases, but they are off-label for corneal NV, as there is little evidence for their efficacy on the cornea (Regenfuss et al 2009; Benayoun et al 2012). …”
