“…Past studies have typically been restricted to single temporary streams (Hynes 1958;Bunn and Davies 1992;Closs and Lake 1994) or, if several, to single catchments (Williams and Hynes 1976;Delucchi 1989;Feminella 1996;Miller and Golladay 1996;Pires et al 2000;Bonada et al 2007). As a consequence, it has been difficult to differentiate between the natural spatial variability of macroinvertebrate communities among these stream types and the effects of stream drying (Flinders and Magoulick 2002;Puntí et al 2007).…”

“…The range of water depth, current velocities, and substrate in riffles measured in our study were comparable with previously reported values (Flinders and Magoulick 2005;Magoulick and DiStefano 2007;Rabalais and Magoulick 2006 [3), possibly explaining the lower densities of O. n. neglectus in Shoal Creek, which was significantly deeper than the other streams sampled in our study. The inverse relation between crayfish density and stream size (C5 orders) or watershed size may be related to the proportional decrease in allochthonous materials in larger streams (Vannote et al 1980), loss of habitat heterogeneity (Clark 2009;Mitchell and Smock 1991), smaller percentage of suitable habitat (Burkey and Simon 2010;DiStefano et al 2008;Lodge and Hill 1994;Westhoff et al 2006), or increased predation (Flinders and Magoulick 2003;Hill and Lodge 1995;Stein and Magnuson 1976).…”

“…Crayfish may choose larger or more complex substrates because they provide shelter from vertebrate or conspecific predators (Stein and Magnuson 1976, Stein 1977, Blake and Hart 1994, Kreshner and Lodge 1995. Some crayfish species tolerate a broad range of temperature, but tolerances are typically species-specific (Flinders and Magoulick 2003). Orconectes rusticus density was significantly related to mean summer temperature.…”

“…The proportions of riffle, run, and pool habitat in each reach were estimated visually, and proportions of individual substrates (e.g., cobble) were quantified according to the Wentworth scale (Cummins 1962). Sampling occurred in wadable habitats with a quantitative kick-net method by disturbing the substrates of a 1 m2 area directly upstream of a 0.5-mm mesh seine for 60 sec (Flinders and Magoulick 2003). Two distinct substrate sizes were sampled in each reach -mixed gravel-cobble and large limestone boulder slabs eroded from the parent bedrock.…”
