Effects of strand length and layer structure on some properties of strandboard made from bamboo

Abstract: Strandboard panels were experimentally produced from moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) using various strand lengths and layer structures to evaluate the effects of manufacturing parameters on panel properties. The strandboard was fabricated in a laboratory using diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) resin and laboratory-made strands of four lengths and four different structures. Strand alignment distributions and concentration parameter (k) values were greatly affected by strand length. A linear correlation w… Show more

“…An OSB is a matted panel made of strands that are sliced in the longitudinal direction from fast-growing round wood logs with small diameters and bonded with an exterior-type binder under heat and pressure (Structural Board Association 2005). A large number of studies on bamboo OSB have been conducted, showing that they can be effectively manufactured at an industrial scale (Lee et al 1996;Sumardi et al 2008;Febrianto et al 2012;Sumardi and Suzuki 2013).…”

“…An interesting point was that the standard deviation of the UNID board was higher than the standard deviation of the random board. The simplicity of the RAND board mat forming influences the standard deviation of the RAND board, and shorter strandlengths were more easily oriented [8].…”

“…Bamboo strandboard for structural use [1], bamboo zephyr board [2], properties of bamboo particleboard [3], dimensional stability improvement using a steam-injection press [4], influence of age, particle size, resin and wax content on board properties [5], application of bamboo powder as main material for particleboard production [6], manufacturing and basic properties of bamboo strandboard, including alignment angle parameters [7], strand-length [8], board densities [9] and random board [10] have been investigated. However, most of these studies were based on the application of short-strand bamboo.…”

“…For each combination, about 1000 strands were tested. Sumardi et al 2008) To measure the strand angle, photographs of strands were recorded as digital image data. The orientation angle was measured with a personal computer using the free software Scion Image version 3.0.…”
