Effects of stimulus presentation mode and subcortical laterality in speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses

Abstract: The timing of speech-evoked responses is not related to the stimulus presentation mode; however, binaural stimulation produces more robust responses. Lateral asymmetry in the representation of speech elements was not considerable at the brainstem level.

“…However, when the subgroups were examined, most of the significant differences between the poor auditory behavioral test performers in the mTBI group compared to controls were seen in the right quiet condition. A right ear advantage for some portions of the speech-ABR has been reported by Hornickel et al (2009), but not consistently observed for all components (Ahadi et al 2014) or in all studies (Vander Werff & Burns 2011). Although injury variables certainly complicate whether ear asymmetries may exist in mTBI, it is interesting that that observed differences were most apparent in the right ear.…”

“…Ahadi et al [25] presented the sound stimulus on three conditions: monaural right, monaural, and binaural left. They showed that the magnitude and strength of speech ABR responses depend on the stimulus presentation mode, and the binaural presentation of speech syllable enables better visualization of the response, however,…”
