Effects of Stigmasterol and β-Sitosterol on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in a Mouse Model: A Lipidomic Analysis

Abstract: To study the effects of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol on high-fat Western diet (HFWD)-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), lipidomic analyses were conducted in liver samples collected after 33 weeks of the treatment. Principal component analysis showed these phytosterols were effective in protecting against HFWD-induced NAFLD. Orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) and S-plots showed that triacylglycerols (TGs), phosphatidylcholines, cholesteryl esters, diacylg… Show more

“…PCA is an unsupervised multivariable statistical method to discriminate the inter-relationships among different groups in a multivariate pattern (Feng, Gan, et al, 2018). In Figure 3a The results were consistent with those from chemical composition analysis ( Figure 1) and antioxidation analysis ( Table 2).…”

“…Obviously, the concentrations of β‐sitosterol in A. pernyi pupae oil (3.36 ± 0.19 mg g −1 ) and B. mori pupae oil (3.34 ± 0.16 mg g −1 ) were higher than those in peanut oil (1.61–1.72 mg g −1 ) and soybean oil (1.55–1.75 mg g −1 ) . It is documented that β‐sitosterol contributes to lowering of the levels of serum total cholesterol and low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol . Therefore, silkworm pupae oil acts as a potential functional oil due to the cholesterol‐lowering effects.…”

“…The presented method can easily be utilized for non-AT samples containing high amounts of neutral lipids, e.g. tissue samples from subjects with fatty-liver disease [40], [41]. Such samples, under common extraction and measurement conditions, would interfere with full lipidomic analysis due to ion suppression.…”
