Effects of Soy Protein Diet on the Expression of Adipose Genes and Plasma Adiponectin

Abstract: Many studies have reported the cholesterol-lowering, anti-lipogenic, anti-obesity and anti-hypertensive effects of soy protein. Adipose tissue-specific plasma protein, adiponectin, has anti-atherogenic and anti-insulin-resistance properties. Here, we investigated the effects of soy protein diet on body fat composition, plasma glucose, lipid and adiponectin levels and expression of genes involved in glucose and fatty acid metabolism in obese KK-A y mice. Body weights and adipose tissue weights of mesenteric, ep… Show more

“…In animal models, adiponectin infusion has beneficial effects concerning the metabolic syndrome, insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular function. In humans, different factors can cause hyperadiponectinaemia and hence its beneficial effects: weight loss, 37 diet factors (soy protein, oils) 38 and drugs, such as thiazolidinediones, 30 angiotensin converter enzyme inhibitors 39 or angiotensin receptor blockers. 40 In our sample, prescription of the latter two groups of drugs was in total almost 10% higher in hypertensive patients.…”

“…[11][12][13] In a recent report, Nagasawa et al reported that SPI intake decreased blood glucose in diabetic kk-Ay mice. 14) Recently, Samoto et al found that 11S globulin (glycinin), lipophilic protein (LP), and 7S globulin (-conglycinin) are the major protein components of SPI. 15) They reported that the ratio of -conglycinin in SPI is 23%.…”
