Effects of sources of knowledge on frugal innovation: moderating role of environmental turbulence

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of internal and external sources of knowledge on frugal innovation (FI), and to what extent this relationship is strengthened/weakened, authors also analyzed the moderating role of market and technological turbulence. Design/methodology/approach This is an empirical research. Data were collected from 382 SMEs through questionnaire survey, applied SmartPLS technique to analyse the data. Findings Findings revealed the significant effects of inte… Show more

“…In this vein, universities' knowledge transfer processes can play a pivotal role in driving inclusive development if they incorporate agendas associated with pressing societal challenges (Arocena et al, 2015;Melkas et al, 2019;Pisoni et al, 2018;Steinfield and Holt, 2019). In this regard, a particular dimensionoften overlooked in the frugal innovation literatureis associated with the scientific competences of universities, which can enable more efficient use of resources and enhanced functionality for vulnerable communities (Dost et al, 2019;Rao, 2019). Accordingly, the provision of academic research dedicated to tackling social needs at the local level functions as a key enabler of frugal innovation (Niroumand et al, 2020).…”

“…PLS-SEM is particularly useful for producing robust estimations for structural models and gaining insights on causal relations among latent variables, providing high statistical power rendering it adequate for exploratory research and theory development (Hair et al , 2019). Current research in the field of knowledge management has adopted PLS-SEM and achieved valuable findings, such as the exploitation of shared knowledge and its mediating effect on creative behavior (Kim, 2019), environmental turbulence affecting the impact of different knowledge sources on frugal innovation (Dost et al , 2019), effects of technological uncertainty and dynamic capabilities on collaborative innovation (Jiao et al , 2019) and the generation of performance measures for knowledge management ventures (Oufkir and Kassou, 2019).…”

“…The economic instability and environmental turbulence in recent years have greatly affected firm’s strategy and innovation efforts both in developed and developing countries (Archibugi et al , 2013; Rossetto et al , 2017). Specially, in emerging and developing market, restricting resources impelled firms to rethink their innovation strategies, among which, the term of “frugal innovation” has emerged and become a popular buzzword among scholars and practitioners (Von Zedtwitz et al , 2015; Pansera, 2018; Dost et al , 2019). Hossain et al (2016) considered “frugal innovation as a resource scarce solution (i.e.…”
