Effects of Sound Interventions on the Permeability of the Blood–Brain Barrier and Meningeal Lymphatic Clearance

Abstract: The meningeal lymphatic, or glymphatic, system is receiving increasing attention from the scientific community. Recent work includes noninvasive techniques to demonstrate relationships between blood–brain barrier (BBB) activity and the glymphatic system in the human central nervous system. One potential technique is the use of music/sound to enhance BBB permeability regarding the movement of small molecules in and out of the brain. However, there is minimal knowledge regarding the methodical investigation(s) o… Show more

“…The result shows that music and sound interventions do, in fact, contribute to the opening of the BBB and subsequently increase the function of the meningeal lymphatic system. Evidence also suggests that music/sound can reduce the collateral effects of brain injuries [28]. The brain's lymphatic drainage after opening the BBB is beautifully demonstrated in ref.…”

“…In addition, a novel method using the noninvasive music-induced opening of the BBB stimulates lymphatic A␤ clearance [56]. Another study indicated that sound/music facilitates the opening of the BBB, accelerates waste clearance from mLVs, and subsequently improves cognitive function [57]. When the BBB opens with high permeability, the meningeal vascular diameter increases, triggering solute flow from mLVs to the lymph nodes.…”

“…Thus, the BBB and mLVs cooperate with each other to facilitate the removal of metabolic waste. However, the underlying mechanisms bridging the BBB and meningeal lymphatic drainage remain to be elucidated [57].…”

“…There is not yet a complete understanding of its beneficial biomedical and psychological effects, but the proposed actions are said to focus on the cerebral structures involved in emotivity and decision functionality, "including sympathetic arousal and dopaminergic circuit activation" [13]. However, generally, melotherapy (neurologic music therapy) is considered in some of the literature data to have the capability of mitigating the expansion of neurodegenerative pathologies such as AD, including combating the related reduction in social relationships and possibly even actions like ameliorating motor impairments that frequently appear after brain lesions [136]. Therefore, the enhanced availability of music is to be considered in domiciliary settings such as "daycare centers and nursing homes" [137].…”
