Effects of Solvent Diols on the Synthesis of ZnFe2O4 Particles and Their Use as Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Catalysts

Abstract: A solvothermal method was used to prepare zinc ferrite spinel oxide (ZnFe2O4) using ethylene glycol and 1,4 butanediol as solvent diols, and the influence of diols on the physical properties of ZnFe2O4 particles was investigated. The produced particles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and the catalytic activity for the organic pollutant decomposition by heterogeneous photo-Fento… Show more

“…Subsequently, the respective mixture was charged into PTFE-lined stainless autoclaves and submitted to a hydrothermal treatment at 170 °C for 12 h. After the crystallization step, the formed powders were molecule, which it is widely applied in textile industries. The experimental conditions used in the experiments were based on a previous work 25 . The experiments were carried out at 25 °C using a glass reactor with 0.25 L of capacity.…”

“…Several ironbased materials, such as FeVO 4 , CuFe 2 O 4 , Fe 3 O 4 , α-Fe 2 O 3 , and α-FeOOH have been applied as catalysts in Fenton reaction in order to remove the pollutant compounds [8][9][10][11]. Recently, ZnFe 2 O 4 oxide has received attention due to its high catalytic potential to degrade organic pollutants [12][13][14].…”

“…The analytical grade reagents used in this work were acquired from Synth and Sigma 14 ; soluble in water) was provided by a textile company from southern Brazil. This dye was herein selected, because it is largely employed in textile industries and is a common pollutant in textile effluents [24,25].…”

“…A tecnologia Fenton consiste na combinação de peróxido de hidrogênio e cátions de ferro em um meio aquoso, produzindo radicais altamente reativos (HO • ) [8], levando à oxidação do poluente orgânico. Na presença de luz (conhecida como reação foto-Fenton), a velocidade de degradação do poluente aumenta significativamente [9,10].…”
