“…We discovered that a 12-week Pilates exercise intervention twice a week could significantly improve lower limb muscle strength in women. Our findings reinforce discoveries by empirical researchers (Lee & Rachel, 2005;Otto et al, 2004;Rogers & Gilbson, 2009;Sekendiz et al, 2007;Sewright et al, 2004). We also confirmed that a 12-week Pilates exercise intervention, twice a week for 1 hour each time, can significantly improve trunk flexibility in women.…”

“…Caldwell and colleagues (2008) reasoned that this was because the muscle strength of the young participants was at its peak; thus no improvement was observed from the dynometers. Sewright, Martens, Axtell, and Rinehardt (2004), however, conducted a study with similar-average aged participants, and their findings showed that Pilates exercise could still significantly improve muscle strength. The possible reason for the contradiction could be that Sewright and colleagues (2004) and Caldwell and colleagues (2008) were using different muscle fitness indicators.…”

“…The Pilates method has been considered an optimal exercise modality for improving the strength and endurance of back muscles [25]. Sewright (2006) performed six weeks of Pilates training on sixteen(n=16) collegiate tennis players to measure the effects on muscular endurance. The results showed an increased muscular endurance of 44.57 seconds at the end of training [32].…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Such injuries are estimated to affect 95% of professional ballet dancers, [6][7][8][9] who therefore could benefit from exercises developed by Joseph Pilates that are aimed at increasing flexibility and endurance of the "core muscles." [10][11][12] The core is composed of 29 pairs of muscles that support the hip-pelvis-lumbar spine complex. 13 Core stability has been defined as the ability to control the positioning and movement of the trunk over the pelvis and to transfer strength to the upper and lower limbs.…”
