Effects of simultaneous transfer of heat and tritium through Li–Pb or Flibe blanket

Abstract: a b s t r a c tTransport of tritium (T) and heat is calculated to estimate the performance of liquid Li 17 Pb 83 (Li-Pb) or Li 2 BeF 4 (Flibe) as a T-breeder in a fusion reactor blanket. T is bred in such a way of low leak to facilities outside and continuous recovery by a removal system, and heat is transferred through structural walls to He coolant efficiently. In this paper, T permeation in a blanket composed of structural materials and liquid Li-Pb or Flibe is calculated based on data of previous experimen… Show more

“…Although its order is in agreement among other solubility data, its temperature dependence shows different trend. The same trend was reported by the recent research [2]. There is possibility in that the conditions of Li 17 Pb 83 were different from run to run.…”

“…When the output of a fusion reactor is 1 GW and authorized T leak to the environment is 1 g/year ( 10 Ci/day), it is necessary that the ratio of recovery to production of T is more than 99% [2]. For realizing high T recovery from a Li 17 Pb 83 blanket loop and controlling to low T leak from a system, mass-transfer data of diffusivity and solubility of hydrogen isotopes in Li 17 Pb 83 are indispensable.…”

“…Without Li 17 Pb 83 layer, the permeation rate of H or D through ␣-Fe is 10 3 times faster than that through Pb-Li. Therefore, the permeation resistance of H and D through ␣-Fe is considered to be negligibly small compared to that through Li 17 Pb 83 [11]. The permeation flux of hydrogen isotopes, J k,0 (mol/m 2 s), in the one-dimensional direction for the one-component and also two-component syetems is described by the following equation:…”
