Effects of Selenium Supplement on B Lymphocyte Activity in Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis Rats

Abstract: Background and Objective. Thyroid is the organ with the highest selenium content in mammals, and selenium is an essential micronutrient that has close relationship with thyroid autoimmunity. However, the mechanism of how selenium modulates autoimmune thyroiditis remains to be elucidated. Thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), which are produced by B lymphocytes, play a crucial role in autoimmune thyroiditis. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of selenium supp… Show more

“…The immunomodulating effect of Se on the humoral and cellular components of the autoimmune process in the thyroid gland is noted. In rats with experimental AIT, after the use of selenium yeast dietary supplement, in addition to a decrease in the levels of TgAb, TPOAb and a decrease in B-cell-activating factor (BAFF) in the blood serum, the expression of IL-10 in the thyroid tissue increased, the number of Breg in the spleen increased, and also decreased TSH level ( 77 ). Selenium increased the percentage and enhanced the activity of Treg, suppressed the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, prevented the apoptosis of follicular cells and provided protection against thyroiditis ( 45 , 74 ).…”

“…In a rat model of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis, selenium yeast was found to partially attenuate immune imbalances, including preventing fluctuations in serum TSH [ 218 ]. Additionally, in a recent study following males with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis suffering from infertility, selenium supplementation was effective at improving sperm parameters [ 219 ].…”
