Effects of sediment disturbance regimes onSpartinaseedling establishment: Implications for salt marsh creation and restoration

Abstract: Seedling establishment is an important process relevant for the restoration of salt marsh within the framework of sustainable coastal defense schemes. Recent studies have increasingly highlighted how the short-term (i.e., the day-to-day) sediment dynamics can form major bottlenecks for seedling establishment. Until recently, studies on quantifying the threshold values of such short-term sediment dynamics for marsh seedlings remain rare. As accretion/erosion trends and dynamics may differ greatly under global c… Show more

“…This has important implications for marsh formation. These areas could potentially be a starting point where pioneer marsh species can find their window of opportunity (Cao et al, 2017;De Haas et al, 2018). This was recently also concluded in a numerical modelling study of estuaries with mud and vegetation (Lokhorst et al, 2018).…”

“…Notwithstanding longer‐term controls on decadal marsh edge position changes, daily bed level change, driven by the combination of a number of ecological and physical processes (Corenblit et al, ; Deegan et al, ; Friedrichs, ; Green & Coco, ; Mariotti & Fagherazzi, ), has been showed to determine the elevation in the tidal prism where seedlings of salt marsh pioneer species can establish seasonally (Bouma et al, ; Cao et al, ; Silinski et al, ). Moreover, bed level change at the tidal flat adjacent to a stable marsh platform has also been identified as a process driving cliff initiation (Bouma et al, ).…”
