Background: With heart disease being the leading cause of death for people in the worldwide, cost-effective therapies supporting healthy heart function are highly needed. Heart dysfunction is the mani-festation of heart diseases. Inflammation, oxidative stress and hypercholesterolemia are risk factors in the pathogenesis of heart dysfunction. Many nutraceutical compositions containing Coenzyme Q10, resveratrol, extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaf, Garlic Bulb, red rice yeast, and bovine colostrum appear to have potential in improving heart dysfunction. Objective: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether a new combination containing abovementioned nutraceuticals (Cardio) is protective against damage of heart function. Methods: In this study, C57BL/6J mice were divided into control, high fat high cholesterol diet fed group (HFHC), and HFHC diet + Cardio (Cardio group). The mice were fed for 16 weeks. Plasma lipid levels, inflammation, oxidative damage, and pa-rameters of heart function were measured. Results: Plasma lipid levels, inflammation, oxidative damage, and parameters of heart function were measured. Cardio treatment significantly inhibited hypercholesterolemia, reduced level of heart markers including LDH and CK, improved 1 heart function, and reduced HFHC diet induced increased levels of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β. Conclusion: Cardio has a protective effect on heart dysfunction, potentially by ameliorating hypercholesterolemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly used by patients nowadays. The pooled prevalence of CAM use is about 51%. Many types of CAM have been practiced by patients with diabetes. Some of them showed promising results on blood glucose and other cardiometabolic parameters such as blood pressure, body mass, and lipid profile. This chapter explores two main types of CAM: Herbs and mind–body therapy. Different types of mind–body therapy and plants, plant extracts, and herbal substances have been utilized for an extended period and are sometimes favored by many individuals with T2D. Those practices and compounds found in these natural remedies are believed to have the potential to benefit the body in several ways, including the reduction of symptoms, alleviation of pain, and promotion of overall health. This chapter includes a summary of the findings of the available systematic reviews and meta-analyses regarding the most used medicinal herbs and body–mind therapies. In conclusion, as some of these interventions are promising, it is unclear to what extent glucose metabolism and certain substances can help mitigate complications in late-stage diabetes. Healthcare providers should be aware about them.

Background: Ginkgo biloba L. (GB) is an ancient plant with high medicinal value. GB preparations are widely used to treat diseases such as angina pectoris, ischemic stroke, and dementia. Many meta-analyses of GB preparations for these diseases have recently been published. However, the methodological and reporting quality of relevant meta-analyses have not been systematically evaluated and reported to date. Therefore, the present methodological study was designed to fill this knowledge gap.Methods: PubMed, Embase, CNKI, WanFang, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database will be comprehensively searched from inception to June 2022. Meta-analyses on the efficacy and safety of GB preparations for humans with health conditions will be included. Two researchers will independently screen the literature, extract the data, and evaluate the methodological and reporting quality through AMSTAR-2 and PRISMA 2020. Spearman correlation coefficient will be used to evaluate the correlation between methodological and reporting quality. Five factors potentially affecting the methodological quality will be evaluated through univariate and multivariate linear analyses. The fragility index of statistically significant binary outcomes will be calculated to assess the robustness of pooled results. Stata 16.0 and Excel 2016 will be utilized to conduct the statistical analysis, and P<0.05 will be considered statistically significant.Discussion: This is the first research to thoroughly investigate the methodological and reporting quality of GB preparations for health conditions. The results of this investigation will improve the quality of future studies and clinical decision-making.
