Effects of rosmarinic acid on an experimental model of painful diabetic neuropathy in rats

Abstract: Context: Diabetic neuropathic (DN) pain is one of the diabetes complications. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural phenol antioxidant, shows some biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-diabetic effects. Objectives: We investigated the efficacy of RA administration (10 and 30 mg/kg) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced neuropathy in rats. Material and methods: The animals received saline or RA (10 and 30 mg/kg, p.o.; once daily) for 8 weeks. DN was evaluated by the tail flick (TF) method,… Show more

“…Rosmarinic acid could protect pancreatic β‐cell dysfunction and glucolipotoxicity‐mediated oxidative stress (Govindaraj & Sorimuthu, 2015), ameliorate scopolamine‐induced memory impairment (Hasanein & Mahtaj, 2015) and diabetic neuropathy (Hasanein & Mohammad, 2014), attenuate vascular dysfunction (Sotnikova et al., 2013), and prevent diabetes‐induced sexual disorders (Khaki, Imani, & Golzar, 2012).…”

“…In a similar study, HFD–STZ‐induced diabetic rats with RA (100 mg/kg BW) for 30 days displayed increased insulin sensitivity index, while the levels of blood glucose, HbA1c, advanced glycation end products, TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, p38, mitogen‐activated protein kinase, and nuclear factor‐κB were significantly reduced in diabetic rats (Govindaraj and Sorimuthu Pillai, ). Moreover, RA as well as food rich in this compound could be beneficial in the amelioration of diabetic neuropathy in rats (Hasanein and Mohammad, ).…”

“…Rosmarinic acid (RA) has various pharmacological activities such as antimutagenic [10], cardio protective [11], antimicrobial [12], antiviral [13], analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities [14]. In addition to its effect on diabetic neuropathy [15]. Chlorogenic acid (CA) has antifungal [16], neuro-protective [17], cell immune responses [18] and hepatic glucose output effects [19].…”
