Effects of Repeated Episodes of Generic Clinical Mastitis on Mortality and Culling in Dairy Cows

Abstract: Bovine clinical mastitis (CM) can be detrimental to a dairy farm's profitability, not only in terms of lost production and treatment costs, but also because of the loss of the cows themselves. Our objective was to estimate the effects of multiple occurrences of generic bovine CM on mortality and culling. We studied 16,145 lactations from 5 large, high-producing dairy herds, with 3,036 first, 758 second, and 288 third CM cases observed in the first 10 mo after calving. Generalized mixed models, with a random he… Show more

“…However, several antimicrobial treatment regimens are available for CM, differing in antimicrobial compound, route of application, duration, probability of cure, and costs (e.g., Barkema et al, 2006). Other treatment options are to use nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) in combination with an antimicrobial treatment (Mc-Dougall et al, 2009) or immediate culling (Bar et al, 2008a). The probability of cure depends highly on the causal pathogen of CM (e.g., McDougall et al, 2007;Bradley and Green, 2009).…”

“…Clinical infections present with symptoms of localized and systemic inflammation, including swelling and redness of one or more udder quarters, depression, anorexia, fever and reduced milk quality and production. Clinical cases of mastitis cost $179 per cow (Bar et al, 2008). However, subclinical cases are more prevalent (Barlow, 2011;Haveri et al, 2005).…”

“…The estimates from the final models were expressed directly as least squares means (LSM) of the probabilities of occurrence of each outcome (Bar et al, 2008). Estimated probabilities were presented as the risk (%) of live culling or death during the period at risk (−14 to 60 d after calving).…”
