Effects of pruning on flowering, yield and fruit quality in mango (Mangifera indica)

Abstract: The effects of 7 pruning treatments were studied in 2 mango cultivars (‘Keitt’ and ‘Tommy Atkins’) in the Hoedspruit region of the Northern Province of South Africa. Trees that received panicle pruning (during full bloom) treatment at the point of attachment were observed to be induced for synchronised re-flowering, and also attained early fruit set and more fruit per panicle than the other panicle pruning treatments. Trees on which renewal pruning (early in the season when fruits were on the tree) as well as … Show more

“…Better light distribution within canopy, increases the number of well illuminated leaves. It also promotes the rate of photosynthesis that leads to high yield per unit area [19]. A better understanding of the effect of pruning is the need of an hour.…”

“…La época de desarrollo del flujo es importante pues tanto desarrollo vegetativo como reproductivo ocurren solo en flujos maduros. La época de desarrollo como la sincronización de los mismos se puede lograr con poda en la época adecuada, lo cual intensifica la floración (Yeshitela et al, 2005;Vázquez et al, 2009a).…”

“…The flow development time is important because both vegetative and reproductive growth occur only in mature flows. The era of development as the timing thereof can be achieved with pruning at the right time, which enhances the flowering (Yeshitela et al, 2005;Vázquez et al, 2009a).…”

“…Productivity often declines at this stage, normally about ten years after establishment. The development of high-density plantings in mango will require effective strategies to control the growth of the trees (Oosthuyse, 1995;Yeshitela et al, 2005).…”
