The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of a dietary probiotic blend on growth performance, blood characteristics, meat quality, and faecal microbial population in growing-finishing pigs in a 12-week experiment. Pigs were assigned to two dietary treatments: a control basal-diet without probiotic blend (NoPro) and a test-diet including the probiotic blend (Pro) according to pig bodyweight (BW) at the dose of 100 mg/kg of BW. Pigs fed the probiotics had higher final BW and increased average daily gain (ADG), as well as improved feed conversion ratio (FCR). Blood parameters of pigs were not affected by dietary probiotic complex. Meat crude protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) contents were increased in the group fed probiotics, whereas there were no significant differences in the other meat traits. Feeding of probiotics determined a decrease in faecal NH 3 -N (+15.5%) and butyric acid concentrations, whereas no effects were observed on faecal acetic acid and propionic acid. An increased faecal Lactobacillus concentration was found when pigs fed probiotic blend. Based on our findings, feeding probiotic blend enhanced growth performance and meat quality in growing-finishing pigs, and also decreased faecal NH 3 -N and butyric acid levels resulting in a viable approach to reduce animal excreta pollution.

RESUMENEl uso de antibióticos a niveles subterapéuticos como promotores de crecimiento, generan preocupación a nivel mundial por la posible resistencia de algunos microorganismos a ciertos antibióticos, que podrían de manera potencial transferir genes resistentes desde los animales hacia la microbiota humana; existen alternativas como los probióticos y prebióticos, que estimulan la inmunidad del huésped y no tienen residuos en los productos de origen animal, por lo cual se pretende en esta investigación estudiar sus efectos en la nutrición porcina e identificar las principales falencias que se presentan en la experimentación que se realiza con estos. Los probióticos son microorganismos vivos que cuando se administran en la cantidad adecuada, le generan un efecto benéfico al huésped, disminuyen los problemas de salud y pueden aumentar la productividad, gracias a que con ellos se pueden afectar las proporciones de las diferentes especies de bacterias en la microbiota del tracto gastrointestinal. No obstante, en cuanto a su efecto como promotores de crecimiento los resultados son contradictorios, en gran medida por la diversidad de cepas, especies de microorganismos, dosis, la forma de administración; así como también la diferente composición de las dietas utilizadas en los bioensayos.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the conditions for viable lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cells and their heat-killed LAB, and the formulation as well as an alternative treatment to antibiotics to reduce infection, invasion and the inhibition of IL-8 secretion induced by S. choleraesuis for HT-29 cells. Methods:To examined the efficacy of live LAB and heat-killed products in (1) inhibiting Salmonella choleraesuis growth by the plate agar-well diffusion assay, (2) Conclusion:Both viable and heat-killed LAB powder products were potentially useful for the protection of the epithelial cells against Salmonella infection, invasion and the induced inflammation for swine and human.
