Chemical and Structural Characterization of Maize Stover Fractions in Aspect of Its Possible Applications

In the last decade, an increasingly common method of maize stover management is to use it for energy generation, including anaerobic digestion for biogas production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide a chemical and structural characterization of maize stover fractions and, based on these parameters, to evaluate the potential application of these fractions, including forbiogas production. In the study, maize stover fractions, including cobs, husks, leaves and stalks, were used. The biomass samples were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction and analysis of elemental composition. Among all maize stover fractions, stalks showed the highest C:N ratio, degree of crystallinity and cellulose and lignin contents. The high crystallinity index of stalks (38%) is associated with their high cellulose content (44.87%). FTIR analysis showed that the spectrum of maize stalks is characterized by the highest intensity of bands at 1512 cm−1 and 1384 cm−1, which are the characteristic bands of lignin and cellulose. Obtained results indicate that the maize stover fraction has an influence on the chemical and structural parameters. Moreover, presented results indicate that stalks are characterized by the most favorable chemical parameters for biogas production.

Nowadays binderless particleboards have chance to be developed to replace particleboard with synthetic adhesive. The objectve of this research is to determine the quality of particleboards made from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and pine bark waste. The material composition of particleboard consist of 70% OPEFB and 30% pine bark powder with a moisture content of 5−6%. The fiber length of OPEFB is 0.1−2.0 cm and the pine bark particle sizes used to produce particleboard which passed through 30, 40, and 50 meshes. Four variations of pressing time are applied to produce particleboard i.e 10, 15, 20 and 25 minutes. Quality assesments were undergone using the Indonesian standard for particleboard product: SNI 03-2105-2006. Results showed that the best pressing time for making particleboards using OPEFB and pine bark is 20−25 minutes. The best MOR and IB are obtained from particleboard produced from oil palm fruit empty bunches with the particle size of 50 mesh. In this condition, except for MOE, the density, moisture content, MOR and IB meet the SNI requirements for particleboard. ABSTRAK Papan partikel tanpa perekat sintetis memiliki peluang untuk dikembangkan menggantikan produk serupa dengan perekat sintetis. Pemanfaatan tandan kosong kelapa sawit (TKKS) dan kulit tusam sebagai papan partikel merupakan hal yang menarik dan belum banyak diteliti. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh papan partikel yang memenuhi standar SNI 03-2105-2006. Komposisi papan partikel adalah 70% TKKS dan 30% kulit tusam, panjang serat TKKS 0,1−2,0 cm dan kadar air 5−6%. Variasi ukuran partikel kulit tusam adalah lolos saringan 30, 40, dan 50 mesh. Papan partikel dibuat dengan empat variasi waktu kempa panas yaitu 10, 15, 20 dan 25 menit. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa waktu kempa panas 20−25 menit merupakan waktu terbaik untuk pembuatan papan partikel dari tandan kosong kelapa sawit dan kulit tusam. Pada produk papan partikel yang dibuat dengan ukuran partikel kulit tusam 50 mesh diperoleh sifat fisik dan mekanik yang sebagian besar memenuhi SNI 03-2105-2006 untuk papan partikel kerapatan sedang tipe 8, kecuali sifat mekanik MOE belum memenuhi syarat.

Selected Properties of Formaldehyde-Free Polymer-Straw Boards Made from Different Types of Thermoplastics and Different Kinds of Straw

This research investigated the effects of different thermoplastics types and different kinds of straw on selected properties of polymer-straw boards. Polyethylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene of virgin and of recycled origin were used for bonding the boards. Three kinds of straw were used: rape (Brassica napus L. var. napus), triticale (Triticosecale Witt b m.), and rye (Secale L.). Five-layer polymer-straw boards were produced. The obtained boards differed in both the materials they were made of and the moisture content (7, 25, and 2% for the core, the middle, and the face layers, respectively), and 30% of straw particles were substituted with thermoplastics added to the face layers. It was found that properties of polymer-straw boards strongly depend on both the kind of straw and the type of polymer used. The best mechanical properties were obtained for rye straw and polystyrene or recycled polymers, whereas the best hydrophobic properties were observed for rape straw combined with recycled polyethylene or polypropylene. Although recycled polymers improved the hydrophobic properties of the boards, they impaired their mechanical properties in comparison with the reference ones. However, in terms of bending strength, they still met the requirements for heavy duty load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions (20 MPa for P7 boards according to EN 312).
